Visiting Mayfield Lavender Field, Banstead

Created by Brendan Maye in 2002, Mayfield Lavender Field is a 25-acre organic lavender farm with a café and shop situated near Banstead in Surrey. The lavender is grown on one of the same fields it was originally grown in the 18th and 19th centuries, at that time supplying the likes of Yardley. Mayfield Lavender Farm has been open since 2006 so it can get busy at peak times, such as weekends in July/August, so it’s worth heading there during the week if at all possible. The lavender is typically in bloom from the middle to end of June until the end of August and it’s fantastic for photographs.

A wander at Frensham Little Pond, Surrey

If you’re looking for somewhere peaceful to take a walk, Frensham Little Pond near Churt in Surrey is always well worth a visit. Photos from Thursley Nature Reserve

One of the great things about the period immediately after the lockdown was being able to explore again. Much as we were incredibly grateful for our garden, there came a point when it just became necessary to get out of the house and have a change of scene. At the time, National Trust places like Hatchlands Park, Winkworth Arboretum, Claremont Landscape Garden and Polesden Lacey were all closed. Instead, I took a solo trip to Thursley Nature Reserve which is around a10 minute drive away and remarkably somewhere we’d not visited before. Thursley Nature Reserve is a truly special place, JD and POD would have loved it too. Sadly, they didn’t get to experience it as three days after I’d captured it in all its beauty, a wildfire tore through the reserve devastating some 470 acres including an estimated 200-300 animal and plant species.

The mysterious Silent Pool

The beautifully peaceful yet mysterious Silent Pool is just over a mile from Newlands Corner. Both are owned by the Albury Estate and managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust. Silent Pool and Sherbourne Pond is the only major spring source on the slope of the North Downs hence the crystal clear water. Poet Lord Tennyson was a regular visitor and crime writer Agatha Christie was said to have disappeared at Silent Pool after her car was discovered at Newlands Corner. She was found alive and well in Harrogate 11 days later, said to be suffering with amnesia. But the fate of Emma, a woodcutter’s daughter, continues to captivate and bemuse.

Pumpkin picking in Surrey 2020

We always enjoy Halloween what with the dressing up, going trick or treating and catching up with friends. This year is going to look rather different (trick or treating in the house anyone?) but it’s not to say we can’t have some fun! We’re pleased to hear the local farms are still able to offer pumpkin picking as it’s such a great laugh. The whole process of selecting a pumpkin or two that are the right size for carving – or eating depending on how creative you’re feeling. There are inevitable changes this year, due to COVID, primarily in that, all tickets must be purchased in advance and groups must be six or less.

Polesden Lacey: The perfect Edwardian retreat

With its glittering golden walls in the Saloon to the carved reredos in the Central Hall, Polesden Lacey was designed to impress. Situated near Dorking in Surrey, Polesden Lacey was left to the National Trust by Mrs Greville in 1942. Dame Margaret Greville was a super-rich socialite who used the estate as her weekend retreat from which to entertain royalty, politicians and celebrities. Even the future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, spent part of their honeymoon at Polesden Lacey.

A misty wander

Don’t you love it when you discover amazing places on your doorstep? We came across the wonderful Whitmoor and Rickford Commons, managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust, last year and were thrilled. With around 400 acres to explore, it’s a Site of Special Scientific Interest and with paths that lead to heathland and wetlands. It was a bright sunny day when we visited for the first time in autumn and while it was misty this time around, the commons were just as beautiful.
